Guidelines on how to enter
The Summer Of Service (SOS) Competition is an IBI Project under the Pillar of Education. Its main objective is to increase volunteerism among the Jamaican youth. Competitors, based on their reported performance and experience have the opportunity of being rewarded with an education opportunity – that of a University Scholarship or Book Grant.

- Are you eligible to enter? Read the ‘Rules of the Competition’ to be certain you qualify.
- Identify an organization where you can give service to a worthy cause. Seek permission from the authority to provide voluntary service over the specified 8-week period of the competition.
- Complete the SOS Registration form. A scanned copy may be emailed to ibi@ggpe.org.jm up to midnight, Thursday, June 9, 2016.
- Along with the completed registration form, the following must be submitted:
- University’s Acceptance Letter
- TRN – to be indicated on registration form
- One Passport size photograph (JPEG Format) – to be emailed
- Transcript (showing most recent courses completed)
- Character Reference Letter (must NOT be from a relative)
- Alternatively, registrants may submit printed documents (per the items number 3 and 4 above) to King’s House no later than Thursday, June 9 at 4:00 pm.

- College of Agriculture Science & Education
- Excelsior Community College
- Northern Caribbean University
- University of Technology (Jamaica)
- University of the West Indies (Mona)

Rules of the Competition
- Participants must be Jamaican citizens.
- Persons who are already registered at a tertiary institution on a scholarship are not eligible.
- Participants must be matriculating to, or be a first year student at a named university to complete a Bachelor degree.
- The SOS Registration Form MUST be approved in writing BEFORE a candidate can start his / her project.
- Participants must advise the I Believe Initiative Secretariat of their selected project during the period May 11- June 9, 2016.
(Any amendment/s to the project must be confirmed by June 9, 2016. The project may be with an established charitable or Non-Governmental Organizations, or alternatively, participants may create a project of their own, for which approval must be obtained from the IBI Secretariat at King’s House no later than June 9, 2016.)
- Deadline for entries: June 9, 2016 at 12:00 midnight (online registration). Alternatively, the registration form with attachments may be submitted to King’s House by hand no later than June 9, 2016 at 4:00 pm addressed to: The Project Officer – Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence.
- Participants should engage in their project for a minimum four (4) days per week and four (4) hours per day.
- Participants must report regularly to their Supervisor. Communication streams should be determined between participants and their designated Supervisor.
- Any difficulties which emerge during the implementation of the project must be brought to the Supervisor’s attention immediately.
- Participants must sign a register / logsheet at the end of each day of service which documents the number of hours given to their project. Supervisors must approve and sign each entry. (A logsheet is provided by the Secretariat for the start of the 8 weeks of service.)
- Participants must keep a diary written or electronic on the project. The diary should detail achievements, difficulties experienced and how they were resolved. The Supervisor should check the diary on a fortnightly basis.
- Each participant must submit a final report to King’s House no later than August 16, 2015. This report should include photographic or videotaped proof of participant’s involvement before, during and after the project. [NB: It is highly recommended that the competitor captures ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of their projects.]
- The Supervisor’s report must be submitted separately to the Project Officer for the Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence by August 16, 2016.
- External Supervisors assigned by the IBI Secretariat will visit locations periodically to check on the progress of the Participant’s project.
- Reports including pictures, videos, etcetera, become the property of King’s House and may be used in future promotions.
