On January 25, 2023, the winners of the ‘I Believe’ Initiative’s Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Essay Competition were honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony at King’s House. His Excellency The Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, Governor-General, warmly welcomed the twelve high school students between the ages of 15 and 17 who had submitted essays exploring topics related to Media and Information Literacy competencies.
The Governor-General presented the top three national awardees with their trophies and scholarships, congratulating them on their abilities to analyse and interpret the information around them and effectively communicate their ideas. He expressed that the future is bright for all of them and wished them the best as they continue to pursue their passions and make a difference in Jamaica.
Also attending the event was the Secretary-General of the UNESCO National Commission, Mr. Everton Hannam. He along with the National Coordinator of the Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence (GGPE), Mr. Abrahim Simmonds presented awards to the twelve parish winners which included trophies and tablets.
It is important to note that MIL is a crucial set of competencies that aid individuals in maximising advantages and minimising harm in the rapidly evolving digital and communication landscapes. Media and information literacy encompasses competencies that empower individuals to critically and effectively engage with information, institutions, and digital technologies. These capacities are essential for all citizens, regardless of age or background, to navigate the information age.
The GGPE will continue to partner with UNSECO in the advancement of MIL competencies among young people across Jamaica.
