As we roll into summer, exciting opportunities are blooming for young individuals across the country. One such opportunity is the Summer of Service (SOS) Scholarship Program, an initiative that combines the spirit of volunteerism with the pursuit of academic goals.
Initiated by His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen, the Governor-General, the SOS Scholarship Program is part of the ‘I Believe’ Initiative (IBI). Since its inception in 2013, it has consistently nurtured a culture of volunteerism among the youth while supporting their educational aspirations.
This summer, starting May 26, 2023, the SOS Scholarship Program is once again opening its doors for applications. For three weeks, young individuals will have the chance to apply and showcase their commitment to community service and academic excellence.
If you’re a matriculating or first-year student at an accredited local university or college, and between the ages of 18-24, this opportunity is for you. The program encourages individuals with a record of academic excellence, volunteerism, and financial need to step forward and make a difference.
Successful applicants will dedicate three weeks of their summer to a noteworthy cause within their communities. From project planning and implementation to impact assessment, participants will have the chance to demonstrate leadership, project management skills, and a strong commitment to social responsibility.
The program operates under the watchful eye of designated supervisors, who oversee the projects and report on their impact. A panel of sponsors, IBI Ambassadors, and members of the Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence (GGPE) secretariat reviews the work, making it a real-world, hands-on experience for all participants.
While the IBI doesn’t provide a stipend, participants are encouraged to seek sponsorship for any travel costs associated with their projects. In return, participants can earn scholarships and book grants, with a chance to secure funding for their educational journey.
Judging comprises two stages: initial shortlisting by the GGPE Panel, followed by a detailed assessment of shortlisted entries by GGPE stakeholders. The quality of the final project report heavily influences the decision to retain or remove candidates from the program, adding an element of competition and prestige to the process.
Awardees will be publicly announced in August, celebrating their accomplishments and contribution to their communities. This recognition not only rewards participants but also inspires others to engage in volunteerism and pursue their academic dreams.
So, mark your calendar for May 26, 2023, and get ready to make your summer count. The SOS Scholarship Program is not just about winning scholarships; it’s about growing, learning, and making a difference. It’s your chance to be part of a legacy of excellence, service, and impact. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
